Human hair extensions are real hair — which means they respond to the same things your natural hair does. But unlike your natural hair, extensions have no root and receive no oils from your scalp. That makes proper aftercare the single most important factor in how long your extensions last and how good they continue to look. This guide covers everything you need to know — broken down by extension type so the rules are clear for whichever method you wear.
At The Cosmetologists, we fit and supply Echo human hair extensions in Hull and ship our full extension aftercare range across the UK.
The Golden Rules — Every Extension Type
Whatever extension method you wear, these rules apply without exception:
- All products — mid-length to ends only. Shampoo the scalp, but conditioner, serum, oil, masks and treatments go from mid-shaft downwards. Never from the root.
- Sulphate-free shampoo always. Sulphates break down adhesives and weaken keratin bonds. Standard supermarket shampoos will shorten the life of your extensions significantly.
- Never go to bed with wet extensions. Wet hair is fragile. Natural hair wraps around extension bonds during sleep and causes matting that cannot be brushed out.
- Always brush before washing. Detangle completely with an extension brush before getting hair wet. Brushing wet, tangled extensions causes breakage and bond stress.
- Wash 2–3 times per week maximum. Every wash exposes bonds and adhesive to water and product. Less frequent washing always means longer-lasting extensions.
- Never rub hair with a towel. Squeeze moisture out gently. Rubbing causes friction, tangles, and cuticle damage — especially at the attachment point.
Aftercare by Extension Type
Tape In Hair Extensions
Tape in extensions use a medical-grade adhesive tape that bonds directly to the natural hair. This tape is effective but sensitive to oil-based products — the most important rule for tape wearers.
⚠️ Critical Rule for Tape Extensions: Avoid all oil-based products near the roots — oil dissolves tape adhesive. This includes argan oil, coconut oil, hair oils, oil-based serums, and oil-based conditioners. Apply everything from mid-length to ends only, keeping at least 2–3cm clear of the tape attachment.
- Shampoo: Apply directly to scalp and roots, working in downward strokes. Use a sulphate-free shampoo only — never a moisturising or oil-enriched formula near the tapes
- Conditioner: Mid-length to ends only. Never apply conditioner near the tape bonds — even residue running down from the scalp can weaken adhesive over time. Rinse thoroughly
- Serum & oils: Mid-length to ends only. Choose lightweight, non-oil-based serums where possible. Hair serums are safer around tapes than pure oils
- Masks & treatments: Mid-length to ends only. Apply with a tint brush for precision to avoid the tape area
- Heat styling: Keep straightener plates away from the tape attachment. Heat directly on tape weakens the adhesive bond
- Recommended treatment: K18 is the safest treatment option for tape extension wearers — it works in 4 minutes, requires no rinsing, and contains no oils that could affect the tape
Nano Tip & Micro Ring Hair Extensions
Nano tip extensions use a tiny keratin bond attached with a micro ring — no adhesive, no heat bonding. They are one of the most discreet and long-lasting extension methods, but the rings require particular care around product application.
⚠️ Critical Rule for Nano/Micro Ring Extensions: Never apply conditioner, oil, or masks on or near the nano/micro rings. Product build-up inside the ring causes the ring to loosen and the extension to slip. Apply all conditioning products to lengths and ends only.
- Shampoo: Sulphate-free only. Work in downward strokes from root to end — never circular scrubbing motions around the ring area which can cause tangling at the attachment
- Conditioner: Lengths and ends only — strictly from mid-shaft downwards. Keep clear of the ring attachment entirely
- Oils & serums: Lengths and ends only. Hair serum applied to ends keeps extension hair nourished without any risk to the ring
- Masks & deep treatments: Lengths and ends only. Apply carefully and rinse thoroughly — any product residue left near the ring can cause build-up and loosening over time
- Recommended treatment: K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask is the safest treatment for nano/micro ring wearers. It's a leave-in that applies to damp hair (lengths and ends), requires no rinsing, and will not affect the ring attachment
Weft Hair Extensions (Sewn / Hand-Tied)
Weft extensions — including Russian Remy, European, and Brazilian wefts — are sewn or bonded to a bead row or thread track across the head. The weft itself has a sewn or bonded edge that requires specific care.
⚠️ Critical Rule for Weft Extensions: Never apply products directly on the sewn or bonded weft attachment edge. All products — conditioner, serum, oil, masks — go from mid-length to ends only. Applying product to the weft edge causes loosening of the thread or bond and can accelerate shedding from the weft.
- Shampoo: Sulphate-free only. Apply to the scalp between rows and allow to run down through the weft hair — do not scrub the weft rows directly
- Conditioner: Mid-length to ends only. Work through the lengths carefully, keeping clear of the bead row or thread track where the weft is attached
- Drying: Always blow-dry weft extensions fully — air drying weft hair risks the natural hair wrapping around the attachment rows and matting underneath the weft where it cannot be brushed out
- Brushing: Use an extension-safe brush. Hold the weft row gently with one hand and brush from ends upward, working toward the root in sections. Never drag a brush straight from root to end through a weft row
- Recommended treatment: K18 applied to mid-lengths and ends on damp hair is the safest repair treatment — no rinsing needed, no product near the attachment
Clip In Hair Extensions
Clip in extensions are the most forgiving to care for because they're removed before washing. However, the extension hair itself still needs regular maintenance.
- Remove before washing your natural hair — never wash your hair with clip ins in
- Wash clip ins separately every 6–8 wears, or whenever they feel dry or product-heavy. Use sulphate-free shampoo, lukewarm water, and work in downward strokes only
- Condition mid-length to ends of the clip in wefts. Avoid saturating the clip attachment with conditioner
- Always air dry or blow dry clip ins flat before storing — never store damp
- Store loosely in a silk bag or extension hanger — never bundled tightly, which causes tangling and kinking
- Recommended treatment: K18 on lengths and ends before styling keeps clip in hair feeling soft and repaired between washes
Washing — Step by Step
Step 1 — Brush before you wash
Always detangle fully with your extension brush before getting your hair wet. Start from the ends, work upward in sections. Never start from the root.
Step 2 — Wet hair in a downward direction
Stand upright in the shower. Let water run downward from root to tip. Never flip your hair upside down under the shower — this tangles extension hair around the attachment points.
Step 3 — Shampoo the scalp
Apply sulphate-free shampoo to the scalp and work in gentle downward strokes. Do not scrub in circular motions around bond or ring areas. Allow shampoo to run down through the lengths — the extension hair does not need direct shampoo application.
Step 4 — Conditioner, mid-length to ends only
This is the most important step to get right. Apply conditioner from mid-shaft downwards — never near any attachment point, regardless of extension type. Leave for 1–2 minutes and rinse thoroughly.
Step 5 — Squeeze, don't rub
Gently squeeze excess water from your hair in downward strokes using a microfibre towel. Never rub or scrunch — this causes friction, tangling, and stress on the attachment points.
Step 6 — Apply serum to damp lengths and ends
While hair is still damp, apply a small amount of hair serum from mid-length to ends. This replaces the natural oils that extension hair cannot produce itself and makes blow-drying easier.
Step 7 — Blow-dry immediately and completely
Never leave extensions to air dry. Use a hair dryer on medium heat and dry extensions fully — including the root and attachment area. Damp extensions left overnight cause tangling and matting that can be irreversible.
The Safest Treatment for Extension Hair — K18
K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask is our top recommendation for all extension wearers and the safest treatment option across every extension method. Here's why it works so well for extensions:
- Leave-in formula — no rinsing required, so there's no risk of water or product running near bond or tape attachment areas during rinse-out
- No oils — K18 contains no oils that could dissolve tape adhesive or cause ring slippage
- Works in 4 minutes on damp hair — applied to mid-lengths and ends before blow-drying
- Repairs at a molecular level — reconnects broken keratin chains inside the hair shaft, restoring strength and softness to extension hair that has been heat-styled or is showing signs of dryness
- Compatible with all extension types — tape, nano, micro ring, weft, and clip in
Use K18 once per week on damp extension hair, mid-length to ends, before your regular blow-dry. It replaces the need for heavy conditioning masks that are difficult to apply safely around extension attachments.
Brushing & Detangling
Brushing is the daily habit that keeps extensions tangle-free and protects the attachment points from unnecessary stress.
- Brush at least twice daily — morning and night — before tangles have a chance to form
- Always start from the ends and work upward in sections toward the root
- Use one hand to gently hold the hair just below the attachment point while brushing — this prevents tension being placed on the bond or ring
- Never brush wet hair — detangle after blow-drying only
- Use a dedicated extension loop brush or soft bristle brush — standard paddle brushes can catch on bonds and rings
Sleeping With Extensions
- Always ensure extensions are completely dry before sleeping
- Plait or loosely tie hair in a low braid or ponytail before bed to prevent tangling overnight
- Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase — cotton creates friction that causes tangling and can stress attachment points over time
- Never sleep with hair loose if extensions are newly fitted — the first few nights are when the most tangling tends to occur
Heat Styling With Extensions
All Echo human hair extensions can be heat styled safely. The rules are simple:
- Always apply a heat protectant spray to dry extension hair before using any heat tool
- Keep GHD straightener plates away from the bond, tape, or ring attachment area — direct heat on attachments weakens them
- Work from mid-length to ends when straightening or curling
- Finish with a small amount of hair serum on the ends for shine and cuticle protection

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use conditioner on hair extensions?
Yes — but mid-length to ends only, regardless of extension type. Never apply conditioner to the root area or near any bond, tape, ring, or weft attachment. Conditioner near attachments loosens every extension method and is one of the most common causes of premature extension loss.
Can I use hair oil on extensions?
Yes, on mid-lengths and ends only. For tape extension wearers, avoid all oil-based products near the root entirely — oil dissolves tape adhesive and will cause your tapes to slip. For nano and micro ring wearers, keep oils strictly to lengths and ends. Lightweight serums are a safer alternative to pure oils for extension wearers.
What is the best treatment for hair extensions?
K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask is our top recommendation for all extension types. It's a leave-in treatment that works in 4 minutes on damp hair, contains no oils, requires no rinsing, and is safe to apply to mid-lengths and ends without any risk to the attachment — making it compatible with tape, nano, micro ring, weft, and clip in extensions.
Can I use a hair mask on extensions?
Yes, but with care. Apply to mid-lengths and ends only using a tint brush for precision. Rinse thoroughly. For tape extension wearers, choose oil-free mask formulas. The safest option across all extension types is K18 — no rinsing means no product running near the attachment area.
How often should I wash my extensions?
Two to three times per week maximum. Every wash exposes the attachment to water and product — less frequent washing always results in longer-lasting extensions. Dry shampoo applied to the roots (not near bonds) can help extend time between washes.
Can I use Color WOW Dream Coat on extensions?
Yes. Color WOW Dream Coat is sulphate-free, oil-free, and safe for all extension types. Apply to damp mid-lengths and ends before blow-drying. The heat-activated formula gives extension hair the same frizz-free, glossy finish as natural hair.
Can I swim with hair extensions?
Swimming — particularly in chlorinated pools or salt water — is one of the fastest ways to damage extensions and weaken attachments. If you do swim, tie hair up securely, apply a protective leave-in product to mid-lengths and ends beforehand, rinse immediately after with fresh water, and wash with sulphate-free shampoo as soon as possible.
