Investing in hair extensions is one of the best things you can do for your confidence and your look — but how you care for them determines how long they last and how good they continue to look. Here's everything you need to know, from our professional team at The Cosmetologists.
Why Aftercare Matters
Human hair extensions are real hair — which means they respond to the same things your natural hair does. Heat, harsh products, rough handling and the wrong shampoo can all shorten the lifespan of your extensions significantly. With the right aftercare routine, a good set of extensions can last months and continue looking salon-fresh throughout.
The good news is that caring for extensions isn't complicated. It's mostly about a few simple habits and choosing the right products.
Washing Your Hair Extensions
How often you wash your hair is the single biggest factor in how long your extensions last. The more you wash, the more the bonds or adhesive are exposed to water and product — so washing less frequently is always better for longevity.
Aim to wash your hair two to three times per week maximum if possible. When you do wash, always use a sulphate-free shampoo. Sulphates are the harsh cleansing agents found in most standard supermarket shampoos. They strip natural oils from the hair and can weaken extension bonds over time — particularly for nano tip and tape in methods.
At The Cosmetologists we stock a full range of sulphate-free shampoos from professional brands including Olaplex, Kérastase, Moroccanoil and milk_shake — all safe for use with extensions.
How to wash: Wet hair thoroughly with warm (not hot) water. Apply shampoo from mid-length to ends first, then gently work up toward the roots. Never pile hair on top of your head or scrub aggressively — always work in a downward motion to avoid tangling the bonds or wefts. Rinse thoroughly.
What to avoid at the roots: Never apply conditioner directly to your bonds or tape tabs. Conditioner applied to the attachment points can cause slippage and shorten the life of your extensions considerably. Apply conditioner from mid-length to ends only.
Drying Your Hair Extensions
Never go to bed with wet extensions. Wet hair is more fragile than dry hair, and sleeping on wet extensions causes tangling, matting and puts unnecessary stress on the bonds. Always dry your hair before sleeping.
When blow drying, use a heat protection spray before applying any heat. Our heat protection collection includes professional options from Color WOW, Kérastase and Olaplex that protect up to 230°C.
Dry the bonds and roots first, then work down through the lengths. Keep the dryer moving rather than holding it in one place. Once the roots and bonds are fully dry, you can finish with a brush or round brush for a smoother result.
Brushing and Detangling
Brushing is where most extension damage happens. Never brush extensions when they're wet — wet hair stretches and breaks far more easily than dry hair.
Always use a soft bristle or loop brush designed for extensions. Start from the ends and work upward in sections, holding the hair above where you're brushing to support the roots and reduce tension on the bonds.
Brush gently at least twice a day to prevent tangling. If you encounter a knot, never pull through it — work it out gently from the bottom up.
At night, loosely braid your hair or put it in a low ponytail before sleeping. This one habit alone can dramatically reduce morning tangles and extend the life of your extensions.
The Best Products for Hair Extensions
Choosing the right products makes a significant difference to how your extensions look and last. Here's what we recommend at The Cosmetologists:
Shampoo: Always sulphate-free. Olaplex No.4, Kérastase Bain Satin and milk_shake integrity shampoo are all excellent choices that clean effectively without stripping bonds.
Conditioner: Apply mid-length to ends only. Olaplex No.5, Moroccanoil Hydrating Conditioner and Kérastase Fondant Magistral are all deeply nourishing without causing slippage.
Hair mask: Use once a week for deep conditioning. Olaplex No.8 and K18 Molecular Repair Mask are outstanding for keeping extensions soft and manageable.
Hair oil: A lightweight oil applied to dry ends adds shine and prevents frizz without weighing extensions down. Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil and Moroccanoil Treatment Light are both perfect for this.
Heat protection: Non-negotiable if you use any heated tools. Color WOW Dream Coat and Kérastase Fluide Idealiste both protect while adding incredible shine.

What to Avoid With Hair Extensions
Avoid sulphate shampoos — they weaken bonds and dry out the hair fibre over time.
Avoid applying conditioner or oil to the roots or bond area — this causes slippage.
Avoid excessive heat directly on the bonds — always keep straighteners and curling tongs away from attachment points.
Avoid going to bed with wet hair — always dry thoroughly before sleeping.
Avoid chlorine and salt water without protection — if swimming, apply a leave-in conditioner or hair oil first and wear your hair up or in a braid. Rinse thoroughly immediately after.
Avoid pulling or tugging at tangles — always detangle gently from the ends upward.
When to Book a Maintenance Appointment
Even with perfect aftercare, extensions need professional maintenance. Nano tip extensions typically need repositioning every 3–5 months as your natural hair grows. Tape in extensions need repositioning every 6–8 weeks.
Leaving extensions in longer than recommended puts strain on your natural hair and can cause matting near the roots that is very difficult to resolve. Keep to your maintenance schedule for the best results and the healthiest natural hair underneath.
