How to Find Your Perfect Echo Hair Extension Shade — The Complete UK Shade Matching Guide

on

One of the biggest worries when buying hair extensions online is getting the colour wrong. Will it match? Will it look natural? We hear this from customers every day — and the good news is that with the right technique, shade matching is much easier than you think.

At The Cosmetologists, we're Echo hair extension specialists and we've helped thousands of UK customers find their perfect shade. Here's our complete guide to getting it right first time.

Why Shade Matching Matters

A perfect shade match is the difference between extensions that look completely seamless and ones that are obviously noticeable. The goal isn't necessarily to match your root colour — it's to match the mid-lengths and ends of your natural hair, which is where your extensions will sit and blend.

This is the most common mistake people make: matching to their roots. Don't do it.

Step 1 — Identify Your Base Tone

Hair colours fall into one of three base tones:

  • Cool — ash blonde, platinum, cool brown, blue-black
  • Warm — golden blonde, caramel, chestnut, auburn
  • Neutral — a mix of both warm and cool tones

Hold a piece of white paper next to your hair in natural daylight. If your hair looks golden or reddish against the white, you're warm-toned. If it looks ashy or has no warmth, you're cool-toned.

Echo hair extensions are available in both warm and cool shades across the full colour spectrum — from lightest blonde to deepest black — so whatever your base tone, there's a match for you.

Step 2 — Check Your Mid-Lengths, Not Your Roots

Stand in natural daylight — not artificial indoor lighting, which distorts colour — and look at the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. This is the section your extensions need to blend with.

If you have highlights, balayage or ombre, you'll want to match the lightest sections of your mid-lengths. Echo's multi-tonal shades are specifically designed to blend with highlighted and balayaged hair, making them perfect for the most popular hair colour styles in the UK.

Step 3 — Use Our Shade Matching Tips by Hair Colour

Blonde hair: Blonde hair has the widest range of shades — from platinum and pearl to golden and honey. If you're a highlighted blonde, look for Echo's multi-tonal blonde shades which mimic the natural dimension of highlighted hair. Avoid going too light at the ends as this can look unnatural.

Brunette hair: For brunette shades, Echo offers everything from lightest brown through to deepest espresso. If you have naturally dark hair with warm undertones, look for chestnut or chocolate shades. For cool-toned brunettes, ash brown shades blend most naturally.

Dark and black hair: Dark hair is actually the easiest to match — there's much less variation between shades. The key is to match the sheen: natural black hair has a blue-black sheen, while very dark brown has a warmer, reddish tone in sunlight. Echo's darkest shades capture both.

Highlighted and balayage hair: This is where Echo extensions truly shine. Their multi-tonal and blended shades are designed specifically to replicate the dimension of professionally coloured hair. Choose a shade that matches your lightest highlight — the darker tones in a multi-tonal set will naturally blend with your deeper sections.

Step 4 — Order Two Shades If You're Unsure

If you're genuinely torn between two shades, order both and compare them against your hair in natural daylight before fitting. Echo extensions are returnable if unused and in original packaging — so there's no risk in ordering two to compare.

Alternatively, mix two complementary shades together for a more blended, dimensional look — this is a technique used by professional extension stylists and works beautifully for balayage hair.

Step 5 — Use Our Hair Extension Match Finder

Still not sure? Our Hair Extension Match Finder asks you a series of questions about your hair colour, highlights and skin tone and recommends the best Echo shade for you — completely free and takes less than 2 minutes.

Common Shade Matching Mistakes to Avoid

  • Matching to your roots — always match mid-lengths and ends
  • Choosing in artificial light — always check in natural daylight
  • Going too dark — extensions that are slightly lighter than your ends blend better than ones that are too dark
  • Ignoring undertones — warm hair with cool extensions will look obviously mismatched
