What Is Moroccanoil Treatment and How Do You Use It?

on

Moroccanoil Treatment is one of the most recognisable haircare products in the world. Walk into almost any professional salon in the UK and you'll find it. But with so many people using it — and so many imitations on the market — it's worth understanding exactly what it does, how to use it correctly and whether it's right for your hair.

What Is Moroccanoil Treatment?

Moroccanoil Treatment is a lightweight, argan oil-infused hair treatment that works as a conditioning agent, detangler, shine enhancer and styling primer all in one. It was the product that introduced argan oil to mainstream haircare and essentially created the argan oil hair product category that now fills salon shelves worldwide.

The original Moroccanoil Treatment comes in two versions — the original formula and Moroccanoil Treatment Light, which is designed specifically for fine or light-coloured hair. Both contain the same core ingredients but the Light version has a lighter consistency that won't weigh fine hair down.

As official authorised UK stockists at The Cosmetologists, every Moroccanoil product we sell is 100% genuine — sourced directly from official Moroccanoil distributors. This matters because Moroccanoil is one of the most counterfeited haircare brands in the world.

What Does Moroccanoil Treatment Do?

Moroccanoil Treatment does several things simultaneously, which is part of why it's become such a staple in professional salons:

It adds immediate, visible shine — even one application dramatically increases how light reflects off the hair, making it look healthier and more polished.

It reduces frizz and flyaways — the argan oil coats the hair cuticle, smoothing it down and reducing the response to humidity that causes frizz.

It speeds up blow drying time — Moroccanoil Treatment is applied before blow drying and significantly reduces the time needed to dry hair, making it a favourite among busy professionals.

It improves manageability — hair becomes easier to detangle, style and manage after application.

It conditions and nourishes over time — with regular use, argan oil gradually improves the condition and softness of hair, particularly for dry, damaged or colour-treated hair.

It protects against heat damage — Moroccanoil Treatment provides a degree of heat protection when applied before styling, though it shouldn't be relied on as a primary heat protectant for very high temperatures.

What's In Moroccanoil Treatment?

The key active ingredient is argan oil — a cold-pressed oil from the kernels of the argan tree native to Morocco. Argan oil is exceptionally rich in oleic and linoleic fatty acids, vitamin E and antioxidants, all of which nourish, protect and add shine to hair.

Moroccanoil Treatment also contains cyclomethicone and dimethicone — silicones that provide the immediate smoothing, detangling and shine-enhancing effects. These give the product its characteristic instant result.

The formula also includes proteins that help strengthen and protect the hair shaft over time.

How to Use Moroccanoil Treatment — Step by Step

Moroccanoil Treatment is extremely versatile and can be used in several ways depending on your hair type and what you're trying to achieve.

As a pre-styling treatment (most common use):

Step 1 — After washing, towel dry your hair until it's damp but not dripping.

Step 2 — Dispense a small amount of Moroccanoil Treatment into your palm. The amount depends on your hair length and thickness — start with a 5 pence-sized amount for short to medium hair, a 10 pence-sized amount for longer or thicker hair.

Step 3 — Rub your palms together to distribute the product evenly, then work it through your hair from mid-length to ends. Avoid applying directly to the roots as this can make fine hair look greasy.

Step 4 — Comb or brush through to distribute evenly, then blow dry or style as normal.

As a finishing treatment on dry hair:

Dispense 1–2 drops into your palm, rub together and smooth over dry, styled hair to add shine, tame flyaways and give a polished finish. This is one of the most popular uses among professional stylists.

As an overnight treatment:

Apply a more generous amount to dry hair, focusing on the ends. Put hair in a loose braid or bun and sleep on it. Wash out the next morning for deeply conditioned, nourished hair.

How Much Moroccanoil Treatment Should You Use?

Less is more with Moroccanoil Treatment — this is the most common mistake people make when using it for the first time. Using too much will leave hair looking greasy and weighed down.

As a general guide: fine or short hair — 1–2 drops. Medium length or normal hair — 2–3 drops. Long or thick hair — 3–4 drops. Very long or very thick hair — up to half a pipette.

If your hair looks greasy after application you've used too much — wash it out and start again with less next time.

Moroccanoil Treatment vs Moroccanoil Treatment Light — Which Should You Use?

Original Moroccanoil Treatment — best for medium to thick hair, dry or damaged hair, coarse or frizzy hair, and anyone who wants maximum nourishment and shine.

Moroccanoil Treatment Light — best for fine, thin or light-coloured hair that can be easily weighed down. Has the same active ingredients and benefits but a lighter consistency that won't flatten fine hair.

Is Moroccanoil Treatment Worth It?

Yes — and we say that as professionals who use it daily in our Hull salon. Moroccanoil Treatment genuinely delivers on its promises in a way that few haircare products do. The immediate shine and smoothing effect is visible from the first application, and with regular use hair becomes noticeably softer, more manageable and healthier looking over time.

It's also one of the most versatile products in any haircare routine — working as a primer, finishing product, overnight treatment and detangler. Very few products do so much so effectively.

The key is buying genuine Moroccanoil from an authorised stockist. Counterfeits are widespread and won't deliver the same results — and in some cases contain harmful ingredients. As official authorised UK stockists, every Moroccanoil product at The Cosmetologists is 100% genuine.
